The world myth tells us that in some sense there are deities in the universe. These deities, like humans, fought in the distant past to achieve some sort of order in “heaven.” There are Father gods, Mother goddesses, tricksters, and spirits in all aspects of nature. It was a deity who created the world, and that creation has been explained to us in sacred texts in a variety of ways. Along with deities and ordinary humans like us, there have always been a special class of people, or demigods, known as heroes. When we compare these heroes, we see that in actuality they are masks for a single world hero who stands for our own path through life, our own striving for wholeness, and the realization of our potential as individuals, as cultures, and as a species.
