What was the Mabinogion?

The Mabinogion comes to us from two fourteenth-century manuscripts, the White Book of Rhydderch and the Red Book of Hergest. Based on oral narratives, these books took literary form in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Mabinogion is made up of sections known as the “Four Branches,” followed by four “Independent Native Tales” that include the earliest known Welsh Arthurian tale, “Culhwch and Olwen,” and by three later Arthurian romances.
