The world hero, as Joseph Campbell suggests, wears many cultural masks, has many faces. He emerges early in Mesopotamia in Gilgamesh and later in the Middle East in Horus, Jesus, Mithras, and others. Greek mythology has many representatives: Herakles, Theseus, Perseus, for example. King Arthur is a later world hero, as is the Norse Volsung and Sigurd. In India Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata has characteristics of the world hero, as does the Buddha, the Ceramese maiden Hainuwele, and the African maiden Wanjiru. The Mesoamerican Quetzalcoatl, in his human form, is a world hero, and so are Native Americans such as Kutoyis and Water Pot Boy.
