In the Vedic triad with Surya and Indra, Agni was the fire of the ritual sacrifice. As the spiritual fire in animals, plants, and humans, he was the ruler of Earth. Like Indra and Surya, he lost importance during the gradual emergence of post-Vedic Hinduism.
