Who is Brahma? |
In the Brahma/Vishnu/Shiva triad of important deities that followed the diminishing importance of the Indra/Agni/Surya triad, Brahma replaced Prajapati as the creator god. But even in that position he was usually seen as greatly inferior to his triadic brothers and, in effect, his position in the great triad was taken over by the Great Goddess, Devi, one embodiment of whom was Brahma’s wife, Sarasvati. Brahma grew four heads facing the four directions so he could always keep his eyes on Sarasvati.

A sandstone carving of the head of Brahma, which faces four directions so that he can keep an eye on his wife, Sarasvati.
