Who is Sarasvati?

Sarasvati has, since Vedic times, been a goddess of knowledge and learning, who in many ways surpasses her husband Brahma in continuing importance. In the Puranas, Sarasvati was sometimes seen as the daughter of Brahma for whom he had incestuous desires. For a while she was seen as one of Vishnu’s wives, who was given by that god to Brahma in order to stop quarrels between his spouses.
