Who is Surya?

Surya was an important Vedic god, or adityas. Sometimes he is called Savitar (the Nourisher). Surya was the sun, the illuminator and creator, who ruled over life itself. Gradually, over the centuries, Surya lost his standing and his qualities were absorbed by other deities. In connection with Agni and Indra, he was the solar fire who ruled the heavens.
