Indian Mythology

The Indo-Europeans and the Indus Valley Culture

Who were the people in India before the arrival of the Indo-Europeans?

Whether or not there was an Indo-European invasion, there clearly were people and civilizations that existed in India before 1500 B.C.E., and archeological evidence suggests that the religious traditions of these people deeply influenced the evolution of Hinduism and Hindu mythology. The primary early culture in India has come to be known as the Indus Valley or Harappan culture—after Harappa, one of the main ancient settlements in the Indus Valley. It is also sometimes called Dravidian, after the language spoken by many indigenous Indian peoples.
