Middle Eastern Mythologies

Sumerian Gods and Heroes

Why are the Sumerian myths often so explicitly sexual?

To modern sensibilities the presence of so much sexuality might appear to be pornographic. The Sumerians clearly had a different view of sex. In fact, it seems likely that they saw it in a religious context having to do with the relationship of the activities of the gods to fertility, the essential element in a culture based in agriculture, animal husbandry, and the necessary propagation of the human species. Among the earliest written hymns are those to the goddess Inanna, the goddess of love and fertility, songs celebrating even her most intimate parts.
