Can you withdraw money from your 401k before your retirement?

Yes, you can but you will pay rather severe penalties to do so, if you are younger than age 59 ½. Although the penalties may include employer penalties in addition to IRS penalties, you will most likely have to pay 10% additional taxes on this money withdrawn.
