How many individual investors are there in United States?

It is very difficult to estimate the number, because so many people are investing in the markets in some way, either by having retirement funds, buying individual shares of stock in a company, by keeping money in a money market fund, which in turn invests the money, by owning mutual funds, or by paying insurance premiums. All told, there are most likely more than 200 million Americans with some exposure to the markets.

Being your own investor without the help of a financial advisor is a real challenge. To do it correctly, you need to invest considerable time in following markets and financial news.
