What about mail that I receive that poses as coming from a U.S. government agency?

The U.S. government and its agencies are rarely sending direct mail advertising to your home. So it is safe to destroy this mail and not respond. This includes offers to reduce your taxes, refinance your mortgage, find you a high-paying job, or offers for health and life insurance. These may very well be scams, and this mail should be destroyed.
