What happened under the bankruptcy law before it was rewritten in 2005?

So many people were filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, walking away from huge debts, that Congress decided to rewrite the law to make it much more difficult for people to completely discharge their debts under Chapter 7. Creditors lobbied hard to have Congress change the law.
