The expression “blue chip,” borrowed from the lexicon of card games, refers to the most valuable chips to use when betting and means stocks that are nationally recognized as stable, growing companies capable of weathering financial downturns. These companies have very broad based appeal in the industries they represent because they are financially sound, managed well, and provide high quality goods and services.
