What is a tax deduction?

A tax deduction is an item that reduces your taxable income, which is then used to compute the amount of taxes you owe at the end of the year.



Just as gambling winnings are taxable, gambling losses can be deductible. However, they are deductible only if you itemize and do not take the standard deduction.
