What is better, a tax credit or a tax deduction?

A tax credit is more favorable, because the amount of the credit, dollar for dollar, is subtracted directly from the amount of tax owed. A deduction only reduces taxable income, which is then applied to a certain tax rate, depending on income, for computing the final tax owed.
