What is forced savings?

Forced savings is a method of saving whereby an individual puts aside a certain amount of money each week that is not used on consumer purchases during the year. In a sense, receiving a refund from the IRS is actually a way of forced savings, since you cannot access this money until your refund arrives in the following year, after you have filed your income taxes.
