What is identity theft?

Identity theft is the stealing of personal identifying information from someone, and using this information to commit fraudulent and criminal acts. It may include acquiring credit using another person’s identity, accessing bank accounts, obtaining and using credit cards, redirecting various private or government benefits like pensions and social security checks to the criminal’s address or accounts, or accessing email and various online accounts using stolen information.
