Why use a debt-to-income ratio?

In order to prevent people from buying a house that they may not be able to afford, lenders will establish how much debt you can handle, and use this as one factor in determining your loan amount.



You bought the house! Good for you! But now you have a mortgage. Don’t forget mortgage insurance, which you can either pay yourself or put in escrow.
