It has been tested in many ways. It is being used every day in adjusting the clocks in GPS satellites. They run faster because they are at high altitudes where the distortion of space-time is smaller. Both the effects of special relativity (clocks running slower) and general relativity (clocks running faster) must be used to keep the clocks running accurately.
