An eclipse is created just as any other shadow, by the presence of an object in the path of light. In a lunar eclipse, Earth blocks the sun’s light illuminating the moon. In a solar eclipse the moon keeps the sun’s light from reaching Earth. Thus the shadow of the moon on Earth is what we call a solar eclipse.
