What are MAGLEV trains?

MAGLEV, or magnetically levitated trains, are different from conventional trains in that they use electromagnetic forces to lift the cars off the track and propel them along thin magnetic tracks. Some demonstration trains have reached speeds of 500 kilometers per hour (300 miles per hour). Although the United States has no MAGLEV train, nor an active research program in this technology, Germany and Japan have conducted a great deal of research in the field.
