What causes the northern lights?

Disturbances on the sun can send large numbers of charged particles into space. When they reach Earth they disturb the Van Allen Belts, causing the belts to dump particles into Earth’s atmosphere. There they interact with the gases in the atmosphere, causing them to emit light. The scientific name for this phenomena is “aurora.”
