What combination of charges causes attractive and repulsive forces?

As you observed, unlike gravitational forces, which only attract masses to each other, electrostatic forces can either attract or repel charges. Like charges (positive-positive or negative-negative) repel each other. Unlike charges (positive-negative) attract each other. A common phrase describing many human social relationships, “opposites attract,” holds true for electrostatic forces.
