Motion and Its Causes

Introduction

What is my position?

Physicists define an object’s location as position. How would you define your present position? Are you reading in a chair 10 feet from the door of your room? Perhaps your room is 20 feet from the front door of the house? Or, your house is on Main Street 160 feet from the corner of 1st Avenue? Notice that each of these descriptions requires a reference location. The separation between your position and the reference is called the distance.
