Magnetism

Introduction

What is the origin of Earth’s magnetic field?

The source of Earth’s magnetic field is its core, made of iron, so hot that it is molten. It rotates at a slightly different rate than does Earth, and this difference creates what is called a dynamo effect, generating a magnetic field. Details of how the dynamo effect works are still a matter that is under investigation.
