What is thermodynamics?

Thermodynamics is the field of physics that studies changes in thermal energy and the relationship between energy, heat, and work. The field of thermodynamics was developed when people sought to increase the efficiency of early steam engines. There are four laws of thermodynamics, which for reasons of history, are numbered 0 through 3 rather than 1 through 4.
