A wave that consists of compressions and rarefactions—such as a sound wave—is called a longitudinal wave. The medium, the material through which the wave is traveling, does not get transferred from sender to receiver; the molecules only vibrate back and forth about a fixed position. The wave does, however, carry energy from its source to the receiver.
