Swedish chemist Jons Jakob Berzelius (1779-1848) introduced the modern chemical notation using one or two letters to represent an element in 1813. Rather than today’s notation for water, H₂O, Berzelius wrote H²O. Berzelius did much more. He published the first accurate list of the weights of atoms.
