Temperature and Its Measurement

Who invented the first thermometer?

Although Galileo (1564–1642) is credited with developing the first thermometer in 1592, his thermometer was open to the atmosphere, so it measured a combination of temperature and atmospheric pressure. It was not until 1713 that Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (1686–1736) developed the first closed-tube mercury thermometer. Combined with the temperature scale he defined the following year, Fahrenheit made a significant contribution to science.
