LightRainbows |
Who was the first person to explain how rainbows are formed? |
Newton was not the first person to understand the optical characteristics of a rainbow. In fact, it was a German monk in the early fourteenth century who first discovered that light refracted and reflected inside a water droplet. To demonstrate his hypothesis, the monk filled a sphere with water, sent a ray of sunlight through the sphere, and observed the separation of the white light into colors along with the reflection on the back of the water droplet.
