Sound

Intensity of Sound

Why does sound diminish as you move farther from the source?

Sound waves do not travel in a narrow path, but spread out into the surrounding medium as spherical waves. As long as the energy in the sound doesn’t change, the power per unit area decreases as the area increases. In some cases, there is some transfer of the sound’s energy into thermal energy of the medium. Thus, there can be some loss of sound energy with distance, but this loss is usually small.
