Why is a stone easier to lift when it is in water?

Even though the stone sinks because it is denser than water, there is still a buoyant force on it given by Wstone - Wwater, so the stone’s weight is reduced.



Hot air balloons work by expanding the gas within the balloon so that the air within is at a lower pressure than the surrounding atmosphere.
