Buchanan entered the Democratic convention as a leading contender for the nomination, but he faced serious contenders in U.S. Senator Stephen Douglas, the Democratic Party candidate in 1848 Lewis Cass, and presidential incumbent Franklin Pierce. Buchanan captured the nomination.
