Fillmore could not win reelection even among his own party—the Whigs. The party instead nominated war hero General Winfield Scott, who would lose to Democratic nominee Franklin Pierce. Fillmore suffered the same fate as John Tyler, a Whig vice president who could not gain his party’s nomination.
