Did Monroe ever consider a return to public office?

Monroe briefly considered the idea of running for governor of Virginia in 1825 but quickly thought better of the notion. Some suggested that he run with John Quincy Adams as the vice presidential candidate for the election of 1828, but Monroe declined. He enjoyed resting after a long career of public service.
