Yes, Andrew Johnson and Eliza McCardle had five children: Martha, Charles, Mary, Robert, and Andrew Jr. Martha served as White House hostess for her mother, who was often ill. She later married David T. Patterson, who became a U.S. senator. Charles became a doctor and a veteran of the Union army. He died after being thrown from his horse during the war. Mary lived in Calver County, Tennessee, and was married twice. Robert became a lawyer and served as his father’s private secretary during the White House years. Andrew became a journalist, founding the Greeneville Intelligencer.
