Chester A. Arthur

Early Life and Family

Did he have any children?

Yes, he and his wife had three children, including two that lived to adulthood. William Lewis Herndon was born first in 1860, but died before age three of an apparent brain hemorrhage. Chester Alan Arthur Jr., born in 1864, graduated from Princeton University and then Columbia Law School. However, he did not go into politics or even practice law. Rather, he seemed to enjoy the good life and traveled extensively. Ellen “Nell” Herndon Arthur, named after her mother, was born in 1871. She married Charles Pinkerton and lived in New York City.
