Did he marry? |
Roosevelt married twice in his life. He married Alice Hathaway Lee on October 27, 1880, in Brookline, Massachusetts. She died February 14, 1884, of kidney failure shortly after giving birth to the couple’s daughter, Alice Lee. In a horrible coincidence, that same day (Valentine’s Day) Theodore also lost his mother, Martha. He wrote in his diary: “And when my heart’s dearest died, the light went out from my life forever.”
In December 2, 1886, he married Edith Carow Roosevelt in London. She lived until 1948—nearly thirty years longer than her husband.
