Yes, Carter held off a strong challenge by Ted Kennedy, the brother of slain former president John F. Kennedy and presidential contender Robert F. Kennedy, to win the Democratic Party nomination. However, he lost badly to Republican challenger Ronald Reagan, who outperformed Carter in the televised debates.
