Ulysses S. Grant

How did Grant become president?

Grant was a war hero of the highest order. The Republicans heralded him as their next nominee. In Chicago at the 1868 Republican convention, the party nominated him as its candidate on the first ballot. He ran against Democrat Horatio Seymour from New York. Grant handily defeated Seymour by a 214 to 80 electoral vote margin.
