Ulysses S. GrantPost Presidency |
How did Grant earn a living after he left the presidency? |
He served as the president of the Mexican Southern Railway for a short time and then became a silent partner in his son’s New York City investment firm, Grant and Ward. Ulysses Grant Jr. ran the firm along with Ferdinand Ward, who later embezzled money and caused the project to fail. Ward served a jail sentence for his crime, but the former president was left destitute.
