Lyndon Baines Johnson became the thirty-sixth president of the United States when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, as part of a motorcade rally. Johnson was riding two cars behind President Kennedy. Later that day, Johnson took the oath of office and became president.
