How did he begin his military career?

Taylor first served in the Kentucky militia in 1806, finding it more to his liking than running a plantation. He managed to obtain a commission as a lieutenant with the local infantry from his famous second cousin—then U.S. Secretary of State James Madison, the future fourth president of the United States.
