There were fourteen vice presidents who later became president: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester A. Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman, Richard Nixon, Lyndon B. Johnson, Gerald Ford, and George H.W. Bush.

James Buchanan served as secretary of state to James K. Polk, the eleventh president. Buchanan later became the fifteenth president.
