Yes. After the Democratic-Republicans splintered following the 1824 election, a group of supporters rallied around Andrew Jackson and became the Democratic Party. Through the work of Jackson and Martin Van Buren of New York, the first modern political party was created by joining together local party organizations and newspapers.
