Franklin Pierce

Early Career

What career—other than politics—did Pierce pursue?

He studied law under various attorneys, including John Burnham in Hillsborough and future U.S. Supreme Court Justice Levi Woodbury in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Part of his legal education took place at the law school in Northampton, Massachusetts. He was admitted to the bar in September 1827, and opened a law practice.
