Zachary Taylor

Military Career

What did Taylor do in the Black Hawk War?

Taylor, then a colonel, commanded troops into action during the Black Hawk War in 1832. He served under General Henry Atchinson, who faced later criticism for not being decisive enough in his military judgments. Taylor performed well in command, leading his troops to victory at the decisive Battle of Bad Axe near present-day Victory, Wisconsin. The Native American leader Black Hawk, war chief of the Sauk Indians, surrendered at this battle.
