Chester A. Arthur

Early Life and Family

What did his father do for a living?

The Reverend William Arthur taught school in Dunham, Quebec, before eloping with his future wife, Malvina Stone, to Vermont. In 1828, he became a Baptist preacher. He preached in a number of churches in Vermont and New York. A strong abolitionist, William Arthur passed down these feelings to his son Chester.
