What efforts at helping African Americans occurred during Grant’s first term?

Grant issued a proclamation that celebrated the Fifteenth Amendment, which had ensured recently freed slaves the right to vote. He also approved of the passage by Congress of a civil rights law known as the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, which sought to reduce violence against blacks.
